Feeding a Labrador Retriever: what matters
A Labrador needs a large-breed food with a slightly lower energy density (around 340 to 370 kcal/100g), a high share of quality animal protein, and added glucosamine and chondroitin for the joints. High-energy kibble marketed 'for active dogs' belongs only with Labradors who genuinely work every day.
For this breed, the key isn't a specific brand but portion control. An adult Labrador weighing 30 kg (66 lb) with ordinary activity needs roughly 1,300 to 1,500 kcal a day, which works out to about 350 to 400 g (12 to 14 oz) of an average kibble. The feeding charts on bags are often set higher than what a real household dog actually burns.
Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil support both the joints and the skin and coat, the two areas Labradors run into trouble with most. If a food doesn't state its EPA and DHA content, it's worth supplementing.

What to watch for
- Body condition: ribs should be easy to feel, and a waist should be visible from above. Weigh your dog every 2 to 4 weeks.
- Treats and table scraps are the most common source of hidden calories. Swap them for carrot, cucumber, or a portion carved out of the daily kibble ration.
- Rapid puppy growth: the goal is a lean puppy that grows more slowly and evenly, not a chubby 'healthy-looking' one.
- Gulping: use an anti-gulp bowl or a feeder toy, and split the ration into two meals.
Practical feeding tips
- Weigh the daily portion on a kitchen scale; scoops can be off by as much as 20%.
- Feed twice a day at set times, and don't leave the bowl freely available.
- When switching to a new food, mix the old and new together for 7 to 10 days.
- If you suspect a food allergy, try an 8-week elimination diet with a single protein source (such as fish, lamb, or insect protein) under a vet's supervision.
- A neutered Labrador needs 20 to 30% less energy than an intact one. Reduce the portion accordingly after neutering.

Health risks that diet affects
Obesity
Up to half of Labradors are overweight. A mutation in the POMC gene has been identified in part of the breed that intensifies the sense of hunger and lowers energy expenditure. Feeding by the chart on the bag without checking body condition is a reliable route to excess weight in this breed.
Hip and elbow dysplasia
Inherited joint defects made worse by fast growth and puppy overweight. Feed puppies a large-breed food with controlled energy and calcium.
Allergies and atopic dermatitis
Labradors often deal with itching, ear infections, and skin problems. Some cases trace back to a food allergy, most often to chicken or beef protein, though most come from environmental allergens.
Pancreatitis
Linked to a fatty diet and the table scraps Labradors go wild for. Fatty treats and raw ham rind are particular risks for this breed.
Gastric torsion (bloat)
The risk in Labradors is moderate. Feeding twice a day instead of one large meal, an hour of rest after eating, and slowing gulping with an anti-gulp bowl all reduce it.
Temperament and exercise
Friendly, patient, and free of aggression toward people or other animals. A Labrador wants to be part of whatever the family is doing and copes badly with long stretches alone.
A retriever to the core. It needs 1 to 2 hours of active exercise a day, ideally swimming or fetch. An under-exercised Labrador chews up belongings and overeats out of boredom.
Mentally, this breed stays a puppy until age 2 or 3: energetic, easily distracted, and perpetually hungry. Training should run on rewards, but those treats have to come out of the daily food allowance, not on top of it.
Coat: Short, dense double coat with a water-resistant undercoat, in black, yellow, or chocolate. Sheds year-round, heavily twice a year.

Under the FCI standard, an adult male weighs 29 to 36 kg (64 to 79 lb) and a female 25 to 32 kg (55 to 71 lb). Body condition matters more than the number: ribs should be palpable under a thin layer of fat, with a waist visible from above. A 40 kg (88 lb) Labrador is almost always obese, even if it just looks like a 'solidly built dog.'

What's the best food for a Labrador?

Why is my Labrador always hungry?
Part of the breed carries a mutation in the POMC gene that disrupts the feeling of fullness. Dogs with it are hungry all the time, regardless of how much they've eaten. When should I switch a Labrador from puppy food to adult food?
Usually between 12 and 15 months, once the Labrador finishes skeletal growth. Make the switch gradually over 7 to 10 days. If the dog is already overweight at that point, move straight to a lower-energy adult food.
How long do Labradors live?
On average 11 to 13 years. Studies show lean-bodied Labradors live nearly two years longer on average than their obese counterparts. Weight control is the single most effective way to extend life in this breed.
