How Dog Portions is made
An independent site about dog nutrition. We do not sell food and our recommendations are not for sale.
Why this site exists
Simple questions like how many grams a 20 kg dog should get, or whether grapes are really that dangerous, are surprisingly hard to answer online. The results are either buried in forum threads or sitting on the blog of a shop that wants to sell you something. We wanted one place where the answer comes with a number, a source and the date we last checked it.
Where the information comes from
The calculators use standard veterinary nutrition formulas: the resting energy requirement of 70 × kg0.75 and multiplying factors following WSAVA guidance and clinical nutrition textbooks. For individual foods we work from the databases of animal poison control centres, above all the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center and the Merck Veterinary Manual, plus guidance from veterinary bodies. Breed data comes from FCI standards and published work on breed predispositions. Sources are listed under every page.
How the texts are written
Our editors use modern AI tools in the process, for research, structure and first drafts. Every text is checked against the listed sources by a person before publication and updated as things change. We are not veterinarians and we do not replace one: anything to do with a specific dog's health belongs in a consulting room.
How we make money
The site currently earns nothing. In time we expect to add affiliate links to pet food retailers. If you buy through one we earn a commission, the price you pay does not change, and such links will always be marked and will never influence a verdict or a ranking.
